The
Formula One championship staged a race on the ancient
Hermanos Rodriguez circuit bear Mexico City. During
the beautifull June month. The battle between senna
and prost was in full swing once again, but this season
the Frenchman was driving a Ferrari. The configuration
of the track was interresting but terribly bumpy. For
once, Berger, in a Mac Laren, started ahead of his famous
teammate, Senna, after grabbing the pole position right
away on Friday preceding Patrese and Mansell (Senna
was just fourth). The surprise was the failure of Alain
Prost to do any better than 13th during the qualifying.

-"My
car isn't competitive with qualification tires,
same old story since the start of the season.
But equiped with racing tires and filled up it's
allright. So It doesn't bother me too much"
said Alain Prost.
13 th on the grid and dropping to 15 th in the
first corner, Alain Prost started a fightback
from the second lap. Leading the race, the two
McLarens driven by Senna and Berger didn't wait
for the Ferrari to show up but increased their
advantage right from the first laps.

For
appearing irresistible, the McLarens make their
tires suffer, forcing Berger to change them as
early as the 13 th of the 69 laps. Now Senna was
leading far ahead of Nelson Piquet in a Benetton,
The Williams-Renault driven by Patrese and Boutsen,
and the two Ferraris. Indeed it took Prost just
15 laps catching up to Mansell (the little Professor
displayed a for him unusual overtaking spectacle
and storming fightback). Pressured by Prost, Mansell
passed the two Williams and the Benetton but there
wasn't anyone in between to protect him from Prost.
Alain Prost catched up with his teammate in the
55 th lap and started his pursuit of Senna, 7
seconds ahead. The gap closed rapidly because
the Brasilian's tires had suffered excessively
in the beginning of the race.

He
drew up with him in the 60 th lap and after a two laps'
truce he took the lead of this tremendous Mexican Grand
Prix. In the next Lap, Mansell also passed Senna.
After his early tires change, Berger came back close
to his teammate when senna abandonned on a blow out.
Thence, Prost was supposed winner, but there were more
surprises to come in the bruising battle.

| Berger
fought his way to Mansell and passed him three laps
from the finish. But the Brit carried on unflinchingly
and retook second from Berger in a dazzling maneuver,

Alain
Prost finally won this iconic race, but this victory
and the subsequent ones (a beautifull summer series)
didn't allow him to salvage his tittle which went
Senna's way after a final famous race at Susuka
where the two pilots collided once more.
