The meeting in Rouen (Normandy) was anounced at the last moment but offered an exceptionnal show, and marked by the presence of Pierre Clostermann, the great war pilot. At 11 AM our stand is ready and attracts many collectors interested in the Spitfire MK IX poster that came from the press a few days earlier. It is announced that Mr Clostermann will be present at 3 PM in the airport building for signing the last reprint of his famous book, "The Big Show". Some buyers leave with the poster promising themselves to get it signed by the great pilot ! I hope he'll accept because I don't know whether he received the letter I sent a few weeks ago asking his permission to use his name in the painting's tittle.

Didn't he like my work ? What could be his reaction ? Fortunately, there is one of my clients, Alain, coming back exultant.
"- He signed it, he signed it !
- And what did he think of the painting ?
- He likes it very much, and his son too !
- Ouf !!!"
So, there I am, at three o'clock, standing in line with other admirers, both impatient and exited. There I am in front of the author of "the Big Show".
"-
Hello Mr Clostermann, I'm happy to meet you. I'm Benjamin Freudenthal, the painter of your "Spit"
- Oh, it's you ! His friendly smile puts me immediately at ease and I proudly hand him the framed poster n°1. We chat a little and the great pilot very kindly accepts to inscribe a few words in my book and a dozen posters that makes the pride of my gratefull friends.
By the way, he also signs one of my originals : the Tempest JFE, that adorns the chapter "Flames in the dusk". This painting was custom-made three years ago For Jean-Claude Ramos, its happy owner, who agreed to loan it for this occasion.
Unfortunately, the meeting was dampened by the death of an english pilot who crashed because of an engine failure in front of 40 000 incredulous people.
This day will remained engraved in my memory. I could I imagine a month ago, while making

the "Spit" poster, that it would be happily embraced by its pilot ? June the 4th of Jule was an extraordinary day !
